there seems to be an attack on a site making 100's of hits per second.

It was spammers making this happen, using someones hacked FTP account from long ago (gumblar pass stolen) to attempt to send masses of emails from a botnet with the server IP. Some probably got out, but it was actually just a bouncer not an emailer.
