    CDONTS on Windows 2003 Server

Yash -- you can easily provide CDONTS support for your customers on Windows 2003 needing backward compatibility. Just copy the dll and register it. It's perfectly safe. Read the following MS article...

    Server Down?

Woah... I hope your whole site isn't written like this...? No offense, but this abuse of Session.Timeout, Application, and Session variables would bring any web server to its knees after a hundred users. And, if you're using MS Access as well, you'll have tons of contention problems. My...

    Server Down?

What the heck is going on here??! I go on vacation for a little while and all hell breaks loose! :-0 Hmmm, well my site's up so I guess I'll stay out of this one... :-) -Dave

    Helm - Yes or No?

With regard to DB size, it all has to do with the record size and what's in the index leaf nodes. If you have a phone book with only a few fields like fname, lname, address, phone, and it's only searchable by lname, then a smart index scheme can save lots of space by having the lname data field...

    Helm - Yes or No?

I would opt for one large database rather than many smaller 50mb databases. If someone needs 100mb of table storage, he couldn't keep it in one database with this plan, right? That would stink. You really don't want many db connections at once just to access your data tables. Think of the...

    Helm - Yes or No?

Not entirely true... for example, W2K3/IIS6 does not natively support CDONTS for mail, but you can register the DLL yourself, although it's not suggested. There are some other things too. Mostly, however, it's a configuration issue, since W2K3/IIS6 is so very locked down right out of the box...

    Helm - Yes or No?

I have some experience migrating from W2K/IIS5 to W2K3/IIS6 with .NET. It's not very easy considering what MS has done to lock-down W2K3. I know this is fairly new stuff so if you need some questions answered during the upgrade, I'd be glad to help out. -Dave

    Problem with RecordSet.ActiveConnection?

Just to clarify... I'm using a DSN-less connection to SQL Server with this connection string: "Provider=sqloledb;Data Source=mssql;Network Library=DBMSSOCN;Initial Catalog=<myDatabase>;User ID=<myUser>;Password=<myPassword>;" -Dave

Poll... what do you guys think about....

Hey I heard good things about Google's popup blocker. Do you like it? I use Panicware's popup blocker which is also free. It's good but it sometimes forgets that you've selected a certain domain as ok-to-popup which is annoying. -Dave

My amazing new site... what do you think?

I've never known a friendly popup. ;) Lots of sites I visit such as msnbc, msn, cnn, and many others including wine-related sites like the huge winespectator.com, have annoying popups and pop-behinds that I'd rather not see. The blocker I currently use creates a tiny sound (configurable) so...

Poll... what do you guys think about....

My blocker seems to be blocking those links. Instead of window.open javascript, you could try using a regular link with target=_blank... that should work, however you won't have control over the size and appearance of the new window. -Dave

My amazing new site... what do you think?

You know, I thought popup blockers worked that way too, and for the most part they do, but some things are strange and it blocks (and doesn't block) certain popups... can't really explain why. For what it's worth, you can just download one of them... they're all free... and check out how the...

My amazing new site... what do you think?

Great design work -- you are very talented. Love almost everything about it, except for the pop-ups. I'm not a big pop-up fan and had to disable my pop-up blocker to view some stuff on your site. Anyway, great site! -Dave

    Custom Error Pages Error

Hmmm, I use web.config to create an error page for 404 and a default for all others and it executes the aspx page and the code-behind properly. Of course, it needs to be compiled and the DLL needs to be in the bin\ directory. I use these pages to email me and log stuff, for example, so I know...

SQL Server question - field contents

Yes, you should really be using query analyzer for this. Make sure to change it's options setting which increases the size of returned text fields, and you might want to display it in text format too, not grid. By the way, I think Enterprise Manager will also place unwanted page intent locks...

    Server side incude doesn't work

Re: Server side include doesn't work at Jodohost Don't put include commands within script delimiters. Use the #include directive outside the <% %> tags. -Dave
