They may have just manually entered the www alias as a c-name directly into dns. I am only guessing though.

You need to setup an alias for the server as www.mydomain.com Do this by going to your CP, and editing the web service on the domain name. At the bottom of the screen under AWStats, there is a server alias field. Add www.mydomain.com That should do it for you.
